About Wayne County: Wayne County is part of the Rochester area and lies on the south shore of Lake Ontario, forming part of the northern border of the United States with Canada. The name honors General Anthony Wayne, an American Revolutionary War hero and American statesman. The county seat is Lyons. As of the 2010 Census, the estimated population was 93,772.
Wayne County, N.Y. is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario between the cities of Rochester and Syracuse. Its county government, based in Lyons, N.Y., serves the nearly 93,000 people who live in the county.
Out of its workforce of 1,000 people, approximately 900 have computers. Maintaining those devices, along with the county's vast IT network, is the function of the county's Information Technology department.
The IT department engaged the assistance of Dox when it was looking for a virtual-server solution to lower its hardware costs, a disaster recovery solution, and a way to help achieve the county government's overall goal of reducing its carbon footprint. In addition, the county wanted a centralized solution for collecting tax data from towns, villages, and school districts.
"I am impressed at how committed Dox is to trying to save its customers money. Dox is very attentive to our needs, and they have a vast knowledge in many different IT areas."
- Matt Ury, Wayne County IT Department
Our engineers suggested and installed a VMware virtual-server solution, which lets users run multiple operating systems and applications on a single computer, consolidate hardware to get vastly higher productivity from fewer servers, save on overall IT costs, and simplify IT management, maintenance, and the deployment of new applications.
We also installed a Veeam® Backup & Replication™ solution, designed to provide affordable data protection for virtualized applications and data that's powerful and easy to use. In addition, a Citrix solution was suggested as an option for centralized tax collection.
According to Matt Ury, the IT Department's Network Support Supervisor, the VMware server enabled the county to consolidate 20 physical servers down to four physical servers, and to expand operability and the security platform by adding virtual servers running certain applications.
The combination of the VMware and Veeam solutions is enabling the department to reduce the number of tape backups from 18 per night to only two per night.
"All of the solutions provided by Dox have already paid for themselves. We have experienced a 100 percent return on investment."
- Matt Ury
"Through virtual servers and the backup solution, we can better manage backups and restores, quickly and efficiently," Ury said. "The virtual servers are much easier to manage, and we have saved significantly on hardware costs."
