What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, FERPA, is a federal law that protects the privacy of educational records for all students. This government regulation applies to all schools that receive funds under any applicable program of the United States Department of Education. Under FERPA, parents have certain rights regarding their children’s educational records and those rights transfer to the student when they reach the age of 18 or pursue an education beyond high school.

What Does FERPA Require?

Under FERPA, schools are required to provide the following:
  • Access to review educational records maintained by the school
  • An opportunity to request that records be amended
  • Controls in place regarding the disclosure of student information and records
  • Schools must notify parents and eligible students annually of their rights under FERPA

Furthermore, schools are required to protect certain personally identifiable information (PII) about students not considered directory information. Educational institutions are required by FERPA to also prevent the disclosure of information without the appropriate conditions or consent by a legal guardian or eligible student.

What Agencies Must Comply with FERPA?

The following educational entities must comply with FERPA regulations:

  • Public Schools
  • Charter Schools
  • Private Schools
  • High Schools
  • Colleges
  • Universities

You can learn more about FERPA at the U.S. Department of Education website.

How Dox Can Help

As part of FERPA, schools are required to have security measures in place to protect the PII of students including protection from digital threats such as viruses, malware, and other online dangers. Such threats could lead to a security breach that may compromise the privacy of students. Dox provides pen testing, checklist audits, and IT consulting services to ensure your educational institution has the security in place to protect student information while meeting FERPA requirements.

Based on the individual results of security assessments we conduct for your educational institution, our experts make recommendations to close any security gaps we may find. Oftentimes, improvements to security require simple configuration changes. Other times our recommendations may include employing firewalls by Check Point software to ensure student privacy while protecting PII, utilization of an intrusion prevention system (IPS), or a security information event management (SIEM) system to improve security. Our ultimate goal is to secure student data and get your school FERPA compliant at the most affordable cost.

With Dox, you get specialized IT consulting and IT support for regulation compliance before deadlines strike.
